Otis & Daisy

Kevin and Anna grew up a stones throw from one another in Dartmouth, where they now reside on Canada’s east coast. Sandwiched between industrial parks, urban sprawl and the Halifax harbour, they have been slowly carving an oasis for themselves on a small city property. This budding urban food lot is where they experiment with their interests in permaculture design, local food production, saving of heirloom seeds and fermentation for food preservation and nutritional enhancement. Watch the the blog for interesting finds on these subjects. Their century old home, a remnant from Imperoyal Village – a self-contained community built by Imperial Oil to house employees in the 1920s and 1930s, is slowly being updated and adapted to accommodate their studio and growing family. Kevin and Anna teamed up to create functional ceramics and launched Ramsay Ceramics in 2015.

Kevin Ramsay

In the late 1990’s Kevin studied under Canadian sculptor John Greer and ceramic artist Walter Ostrom. He went on to work for the conservation department at the Fortress of Louisbourg documenting archaeological excavations. During this time he had the opportunity to learn traditional techniques from visiting Jingdezhen potter, Jackson Li. These experiences helped develop a rich understanding of objects and their social contexts and fostered a deep interest in material culture, history, process and design.

In 2001 Kevin found employment in the steel fabrication industry as a Journeyman structural plate fitter. He spent over a decade working in heavy industry constructing structural components for bridges, pressure vessels and shipbuilding. After an incident that pushed him to make new life choices, he started working in clay again in 2014 and is now enjoying translating his fabrication knowledge and techniques on a smaller more intimate scale.
